A Limited Survey of Aflatoxins and Zearalenone in Feed and Feed Ingredients from Pakistan

        This work presents the current insights for the presence of aflatoxins (AFs) and zearalenone (ZEN) in feed and feed ingredients from Punjab, Pakistan. Total 105 tested samples of concentrated feed i.e. cotton seed meal (18), soybean meal (14) and feed ingredients including crushed corn (17), crushed wheat (15), barley (17) and poultry feed (24) samples were analyzed using HPLC, equipped with fluorescence detector. The results have revealed that 69 out of 105 samples were found contaminated with AFs and the highest mean concentration of AFB1 (6.20 μg/kg) and total AFs (9.30 μg/kg) were found in poultry feed 1 samples. The total mean AFs levels were ranged from LOQ to 165.5 μg/kg. However, 75 out of 105 samples of feed and feed ingredients were found positive with ZEN contamination. The highest mean average level of 19.45 μg/kg was found in poultry feed 2 samples. The mean levels of ZEN were ranged from 0.15 to 145.30 μg/kg. The occurrence and incidence levels of AFs and ZEN were high in feed and feed ingredients and needs urgent attention.
