A trench opening assembly (220) opens a trench in the soil surface as the trench opening assembly moves in a forward direction of travel. A trench closing assembly (250) disposed rearward of the trench opening assembly closes the opened trench with soil. One or more sensors are disposed on an appurtenance (292) including at least a distance sensor (1000G) selected from one of : radar, sonar, ultrasonic or LIDAR.
